The Swedish government has officially appointed Peter Knutsson as the new Director General and head of the Swedish Gambling Authority (Spelinspektionen). His tenure is set to begin on August 17, 2026, and will run for a six-year term, concluding on August 31, 2032.
Knutsson joins the authority from his current position as the Swedish Advertising Ombudsman, a role he has held since August 2024. His professional background includes extensive experience in leadership and legal affairs, having previously served as a unit manager at the Ministry of Finance. Throughout his career, he has also worked with the European Commission and acted as an advisor to the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority (Finansinspektionen).
Madelaine Tunudd, Chair of the Board at the Swedish Gambling Authority, expressed confidence in the appointment, citing Knutsson’s broad expertise in consumer legislation and financial regulation as key assets for the agency’s future operations.
Johan Röhr, who has been serving as the acting Director General, welcomed the government’s decision. He stated that he intends to ensure a smooth transition and a comprehensive handover process to support Knutsson as he assumes his new responsibilities.
The appointment marks a significant leadership change for the authority, which oversees the regulation of the Swedish gambling market, ensuring compliance with national laws and consumer protection standards.
